Newsletter Jobseekers - Ask questions

The art of asking the right questions

You can ask questions. Show interest in the company and make it clear that you have researched your new challenge in advance. However, make sure that the questions are relevant to the job you are applying for.

"Do you have any questions?"

The biggest mistake you can make at this point is to answer "no". A "no" usually shows a lack of interest and preparation. We recommend that our candidates think about questions in advance and write them down to take with them into the interview. This has the advantage that you can keep track of which questions have already been answered during the interview - and if all of them have been answered, your interviewer can still see that you have given them some thought.

Possible questions for the first interview:

  • What is the professional background of the other members of the team?
  • Why is the position open at all?
  • What are the goals for this department over the next few years?
  • What expectations do people have of you as an employee?
  • What does the induction process look like?
  • How does the application process work? What are the next steps?
  • Of course, you can also pick up on things that have come up in the conversation and follow up again.

Asking questions means being open and interested.

Questions that can still wait

Topics that you should not bring up in the initial interview are salary, vacation, benefits, parking and expense regulations. Important: If you are asked about your wishes in this regard, you will of course give an answer. However, do not dwell on these topics yourself - they will be discussed in the salary negotiation and final interview.
