Newsletter Jobseekers - Self-marketing

Self-marketing - the art of presenting yourself correctly

"Why don't you tell us something about yourself?" This invitation offers you a good opportunity to present your advantages in a relaxed and confident manner. So take the opportunity and impress with your personality. Be open and emphasize your statement with the right gestures. But a relaxed conversation needs to be learned.

A job interview is like no other. The questions depend heavily on who your interviewer is, whether the people involved use certain questioning techniques or are mainly interested in getting to know each other in a relaxed style. Nevertheless, there are certain questions that are frequently asked and for which it makes sense to prepare. This way, possible answers can be skillfully incorporated into a casual conversation.

"Can you tell me a bit about yourself?"

This question is actually about creating an introduction. It is a kind of warm-up. Basically, nothing more than a short self-presentation is expected. Your answer should take no more than five minutes. We recommend breaking it down into the following sections: I am, I can, I would like to.

Self-marketing means being convinced of yourself.

I am

The first step is to briefly introduce yourself as a person and describe your current situation. You can also include things from your private life, such as hobbies or preferences, in your self-presentation.

For example: "I'm Marta Müller, 47 years old, I live in Chur and currently work as a qualified nursing specialist with a team management function at the Chur retirement home. I originally come from Thurgau. In my free time, I play chess and spend time with my family."

I can

You present the most important stages of your professional career here. Make sure you never lose sight of the central theme. Above all, highlight the most important stages from your CV for the position offered.

I would like to

Highlight your professional ambitions. Talk about the personal goals you are pursuing with this application. Also discuss the position you are aiming for in the company and what specific goals you have.

For example: "After 5 years, I would like to see and get to know something new. I have the necessary management experience and nursing expertise for the advertised position. I'm also interested in setting up the new dementia ward and the path that lies ahead."

The hands help emphatically.

A gesture is worth a thousand words!

Non-verbal communication supports your self-marketing and is important. So here are a few tips on how you can score points with your gestures and facial expressions.

The small signals of body language

Always make sure you maintain eye contact with the person you are talking to. Anything else comes across as rude and uninterested. You should also use your hands to emphasize your message. However, don't overdo it with your gestures. The basic rule is: be confident and don't tense up. Because as exciting as a job interview is, you shouldn't get into a hectic rush, as it is often calmness that is the most persuasive factor.
